The Surrey Board of Trade (SBOT) expresses grave concerns regarding the recent announcement by the Province of British Columbia regarding the transition to the Surrey Police Service (SPS) as the city’s police of jurisdiction, slated for November 29, 2024.
While the Province touts this milestone as a step forward for Surrey, the SBOT believes that the rushed transition jeopardizes public safety in Surrey and the province as a whole. The lack of comprehensive planning and consideration for the ramifications of this transition could have significant national implications that have not been adequately addressed.
“The Surrey Board of Trade finds great concerns with the lack of transparency in the entire process,” stated Anita Huberman, President & CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade. “Without proper funding and planning, we fear that the level of policing service in Surrey will either remain unchanged or, worse, diminished, putting our community at risk.”
The SBOT recognizes the need for effective policing tailored to the needs of Surrey residents and businesses. However, the current transition plan overlooks crucial funding issues that will inevitably result in higher taxes for Surrey businesses and residents. Moreover, the assurance of continued service at current levels is in question, if not outright compromised.
“The funding issues surrounding this transition are alarming,” added Anita Huberman. “Higher taxes without a guarantee of improved or even maintained services is simply unacceptable. Surrey businesses and residents deserve better.”
The SBOT calls upon the Provincial Government to reconsider the approach to the transition and prioritize the continuation of effective RCMP policing in Surrey, supported by additional resources and services.
