New program will equip 30 participants with in-demand skills for BC’s growing sustainable construction sector
“We want people to have the support they need to find in-demand jobs and build stronger futures for themselves and their families,” said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “That’s why we are funding more training to help people gain the practical skills and work experience they need to move into good-paying jobs. Through WorkBC and partnerships with organizations like the Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade and ACE Community College, we are delivering hands-on training for people facing barriers to employment, including in sustainable construction and building technology.”
The Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade is pleased to announce it will receive up to $443,290.35 in funding from the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia, under the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Development Agreement, to deliver Sustainable Building Technology training that will prepare eligible participants for careers in one of BC’s fastest-growing industries.
“Building a stronger economy and a more sustainable future goes hand in hand, and workers are at the centre of that effort.” said Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario. “This project will help workers in the Surrey and White Rock regions gain the hands-on skills and experience they need for rewarding careers in sustainable construction. This is how we turn opportunity into good jobs, for workers, for communities, and for a cleaner, more sustainable Canada.”
Delivered in partnership with ACE Community College, the program will provide participants with industry-relevant training and work experience designed to build practical skills that support the transition to more sustainable, energy-efficient buildings and construction practices. As demand for green building expertise continues to grow, the initiative will help address workforce needs while creating new employment opportunities for job seekers.
Eligible participants include WorkBC Employment Insurance-eligible clients, individuals receiving BC Employment and Assistance, and displaced forestry workers in the Lower Mainland.

This program will connect participants with the knowledge and practical skills employers are seeking.”
ACE Community College will deliver the training, drawing on its expertise in career-focused education and workforce development.
“We are excited to partner with the Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade to deliver this important program,” said Supneet Chawla, Director, ACE Community College. “By combining industry-informed curriculum with practical learning opportunities, we will help participants develop the technical skills and confidence needed to succeed in the sustainable building sector.”
The program is expected to welcome 30 participants in two intakes beginning August 24 and will focus on preparing learners for employment opportunities within BC’s construction and building technology industries. Participants will gain knowledge in sustainable building practices, emerging technologies, energy efficiency, and other competencies aligned with current labour market needs.
The Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade continues to champion workforce development initiatives that help businesses access skilled talent while creating meaningful pathways to employment for individuals throughout the region.
