Statement on Extortion Calls in Surrey

October 15, 2025

The Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade is deeply concerned about the recent wave of violence and extortion calls targeting South Asian-owned businesses in our community.

We are hearing directly from businesses that they are afraid – for their safety, their employees, and their livelihoods. Many feel unsupported and are unsure where to turn. This is unacceptable.

We want the business community to know that we have been holding regular meetings with law enforcement agencies in both Surrey and White Rock, and that work is actively underway to address these incidents and strengthen community safety. We commend the City of Surrey for taking action through the recently announced Extortion Reward Fund for information that leads to convictions in the ongoing extortion cases targeting individuals and business owners. We continue to urge all levels of government to provide the resources necessary, and urge those with information to come forward to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Surrey is home to one of the most diverse and entrepreneurial business communities in Canada. No business owner should have to operate under fear or intimidation. We call for coordinated and transparent efforts to investigate these incidents and to support affected businesses with culturally competent outreach, financial support, and clear communication.

The Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade will continue to work closely with law enforcement and government partners, monitor the situation, and advocate for the safety and resilience of our business community.
