- Vietnam is Canada’s largest trading partner in ASEAN. In 2023, two-way merchandise trade was about CAD 14.1 billion.
- Canada’s exports to Vietnam remain relatively small compared to Vietnam’s exports to Canada; Canada primarily exports agricultural/food products, forestry, technologies, and machinery.
- Vietnam is a party to the CPTPP, which gives Canadian exporters and investors preferential access and protections under a multilateral free trade framework.
- To deepen Canada–Vietnam commercial ties, Export Development Canada (EDC) signed an MOU with Vietnam’s VinaCapital to support Canadian firms entering or expanding in Vietnam in sectors like infrastructure, energy, retail, health, and finance.
- In Canada’s regional perspective (e.g. British Columbia), there is ongoing interest in strengthening trade with Vietnam, leveraging CPTPP membership and complementary strengths in sectors like resources and clean tech
- Trade diversification – Investing in Vietnam helps Canada reduce dependence on traditional markets (e.g. U.S.) and expand presence in high-growth Asia Pacific.
- Preferential market access – Under CPTPP, Canadian firms get reduced trade barriers, greater predictability, and dispute protections in Vietnam.
- Strong upside for Canadian sectors – Key sectors in Vietnam aligned with Canadian strengths: clean technology, infrastructure, energy, ICT, agri-food, forestry, life sciences.
- Support mechanisms – Canadian government agencies (e.g. EDC, Trade Commissioner Service) are actively supporting links, projects, and risk mitigation for Canadian businesses in Vietnam.
- Cost / growth benefit – Vietnam continues to offer competitive production costs and a growing domestic market, making it attractive for Canadian firms looking to both export and serve local consumers.
- Strategic positioning in Asia – Vietnam is well placed in global supply chains, and Canadian firms can use it as a hub or node in the Asia business network.
